Brake Fluid Change

Hi,

I have a 2001 E320 and I am debating over whether or not I should change my brake fluid. The vehicle has 20,200 miles on it and it has spent quite a few months at time just sitting in the garage. I have now been driving it on a regular basis. The owners manual says to change the fluid every two years, but I don't know if I should wait just a little longer. How crucial is it that you change the brake fluid on its regular interval? If I do decide to change my brake fluid, will I see any changes in the performance of my brakes?

RE: Brake Fluid Change

You have 20k miles on her BUT it is a 2001 car. Id assume that your fluids are 4 years old. I would replace it considering the time factor. The Brake Fluid composition changes overtime with temperature, time, water contamination which may affect its performance...Another classic example of added TLC vs. recommended service interval.

RE: Brake Fluid Change

Change it every two years regardless of mileage. It absorbs moisture just sitting there. If you let mooisture laden fluid marinate, then you'll be changing master cylinders, ABS controllers and/or boosters because of rust. It's a whole lot cheaper to do the brake fluid every two years. Use the recommended fluid, probably a DOT4 like Castrol LMA or Havoline Synthetic. Do not use DOT5.

RE: Brake Fluid Change

I had this explained to me by my mechanic. He said that brake fluid is somewhat hydroscopic, meaning it can absorb water. This water has two potential problems. One as the breaks generate heat it can become steam, putting gas in your brake lines and two, the water can pit the aluminum master brake cylinder damaging it. Better to change than take the risks.

RE: Brake Fluid Change

Thanks everyone for your input. It looks as if I am way overdue for my brake fluid change. I have gone ahead and scheduled an appointment with my dealer to have it taken care of next week. [:)]
