Ok, here’s the mystery. 1998 E320. 57K miles Check engine light on. Codes pulled PO170, PO 173. Until recently only noticeable problem was with hesitation at highyway speeds. Recently it has started at random times to shut down while idling, with trouble restarting.
Replaced MAF, cleared codes. Check engine light out, no hesitation on the highway, car purrs. Then about 10-15 miles after MAF replacement all hell breaks loose. MAJOR hesitation, stalling, cutting out, no power and definitely NO FUN while in left lane doing 80. In addition to dangerous performance various dash warnings begin showing up, everything from oil level check to defective display. Car has troubling idling and often when the key is switched to start position the engine will not turn over, though other electrics such as radio, fans, interior lights work just fine. So I put the old MAF back in and it settles down to its original condition; with check engine light on and hesitation.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks
Got the same codes after "check engine" with just a slight "stutter" and thought MAF - - turned out to be o2 sensor in front of the cat - - -many of the same symptoms and can apparently cause MAF to show code.
The ONLY way to find out for certain without guessing and throwing parts at it is to have it correctly diagnosed with the STAR diagnostic system. Why not spend a few bucks and get it over with

Check your: 1). Crankshaft Positioning Sensor(MOST likely) 2). Throttle Positoning Sensor.....Im sure your old MAF went south already at the same time(re-install new MAF) WITH the above sensors
