Help needed : thinking of buying a 98 E300TD

Hi all,

I have been looking at an E 300 TD Elegance 12cv 1998 model with 260.000km. I have never had a mercedes before and am no car expert. I would like to know if you have any tips:
-service cost (is it more expensive than a bmw for example ?)
-are there any particular faults to watch out for?
-how many km can this model reasonably go up to on a 20-30Kkm per year basis?
Thank you in advance for your answers,

Lisa

hi, i would get a mechanic to check the car out with you for normal wear and tear. check the service history too and take it for a test drive with lots of accelarating and breaking and cornering.

Great car. Have the front spring perches checked out. They are famous for failure on that car - ask me how I know! The A/C died on mine and I've had a few niggling electrical problems. Great motor and car though.

Not sure where you are except you are not in the States!

Here, any used car, including Benz's go for close to Trade-In price. The market is soft.

Carlos's price model might end up a little high - particularly since Auto Trader and other sites have asking prices in the States - not selling prices. The repair costs are similar to a BMW, but unless you know its care, and have service records my preference would be to try and find something with about half that mileage. Everything in the car has 260.000KM on it.

The diesel is a very good engine, but some of the corner cutting as well as the Germans being "ahead of their headlights" on auto electronics with the W210 will take their toll.

Beware of rust... every where.
My car has 535.000 km on it and still runs fine..
So calculation shows that 265k km ..IS half the milage *lol*

Rust is a major factor with the W210, the 300TD likes to go through air flow sensors. As far as servicing/ running costs go,... about on par with BMW.

Once it's all working well though the car will give you years of enjoyable driving (great engine & chassis combination).
