| Instrument Cluster Removal and Gotchas Hi all,
Well I finally took the plunge. After more than a year of hunting for a car and going back and forth between the E320 and the E300TD, I finally bought a car. I wound up with a 2001 E320. The miles are a little higher than I would like, but the price was right.
I've been driving a beater Honda Accord for the last 3 years after I sold my 1995 C280 (loaded) to make sure I had enough cash on hand to close on my house when I moved to Virginia. This car is awesome. I had no idea how much more car the E class is over the C Class of the late 90's.
Anyhow, on to my question. I, like many of you, have the pixel issue that affects the instrument cluster. Right now it is impacting both the clock and temperature displays. I intend to remove the cluster and try cleaning the electrical contacts as I've seen mentioned on this forum. My specific concern is what are the "gotchas" with removing the instrument cluster. I'm no stranger to pulling an MB set of gauges out as I removed the cluster from my older C-class numerous times. One gotcha with that car was that it was imperative to not turn the keys in the ignition w/o the cluster attached to the car otherwise it necessitated a trip to the dealer to reset the SRS light.
I intend to proceed with that same caution in mind, but with so many pieces of information residing in the multifunction cluster, I almost wonder if I need to just completely disconnect the battery as well with this car?
Any thoughts, concerns, or other words of wisdom? I'll wait to remove it until I hear back from the group.
Thanks....and it's great to be a Benz owner again.... Halleluiah, I'm back. [:)]
