air conditioning sound

on my 1998 e320 whenever i turn on the air conditioning it makes a sound any thing i can do to stop it

TURN UP THE STEREO !

But seriously folks . . . .could you be a bit more specific on the type of sound?(whining, hissing, clunk, Gregorian chant . . .)

Don't mean to be a wise-guy, it's been a long week.

Is the noise under the hood (compressor)or inside the cabin? (vents)
