I have an E 320 CDI manufactured year 2000. When starting first time in the morning I need to speed up the engine quickly to avoid the engine from stopping. In cold weather, well below freezing point sometimes even the speeding does not help. The engine runs for about 1 second and stops. After this a new try and the starting motor runs well but the engine does not ignite at all. Just like the fuel line is closed. The fuel filter is changed but did not help with this problem. I would be pleased to have tips to cure this problem. Has anybody else noticed this phenomenon?
Weather below freezing?? Diesel Fuel has the tendency to "gel"/freeze in extreme cold temps. Make sure you add an "Anti-Gel" Diesel Additive to prevent this problem.
sounds like your "Sucking Air" into the fuel system. There are some clear plastic fuel lines comming off the fuel filter housing and going to the injection pump. They might be due for a change. Some of the newer hose ends have cheap clip-on plastic connectors with rubber seals, these seals can dry out and leak diesel or allow air to enter the system. ( Older versions used metal banjo bolts on the hose ends with copper washers and were bolted into place and were much better ). Another culprit is "inside" the top the fuel filter housing there should be a fuel Strainer filter "Fuel Pre-Filter" ( its small like your pinky finger, its incorporated into the housing and is held in place with a Hex-bolt ) and this strainer has an o-ring seal which drys and gets brittle and allows air in. In any event i would say that your sucking in air from one of the many connections in the fuel filter housing. change all the hoses and the o-ring & Pre-Filter that i mentioned. While your in there also change the o-ring seals on the bolt that holds your spin-on fuel filter. I had the same starting problem every morning and possibly again later in the day if the car sat more than 8 hours or so. It would start right up then stall after 1-2 seconds if i did not play with the accellerator as you are doing. If it stalled then I would have to turn it over for 10-15 seconds to just get it going at a rough ilde then after pumping the peddle it would wake up and run normal. I changed the hoses but the problem persisted as I had overlooked the Fuel Pre-Filter.
good luck.
these parts are cheap so change as much as you can.
Problem solved and works fine. The change of fuel hose seals helped.
The fuel system has slight underpressure to keep the fuel fumes inside. Now if the fuel hose seals leak nothing comes out but air gets in. A tiny amount of fuel is left there just to start the engine.
My problem was connected in the beginning to low temperatures but later on it occurred also at warmer weather. Always the problem was only the first start of the day. After getting it running the rest of the day worked fine. All the other starts during the same day could be done at idle.
Now it starts well without problems. Thank you James, you were right!
Please note this as me and James are certainly not the only ones having had this problem.
