Temperature problem.

Hi guys,

I`m a new member to this club and I have a temperature problem with my E-Class W210 1998 Japan spec. The temperature indicator on the dashboard often showed a fluctuation of temperature between 80C to 98C .The problem remained even after changing a new temperature sensor and the thermostat . At one time , the temperature remain high upon reaching home , I then sticked a rolled-newspaper into the fan at the front of the engine , and it was easily stopped . In my opinion , it appeared to be a malfunction of magnetic coupling of the fan to engage to reduce the temperature . My usual service centre advised me to change the fan motor .I was not convinced and I went to get a second opinion . Another service centre adviced me that this is fine so long as the temperature did not exceed 100C . I spoke to a friend also who was quite knowledgeable in Mercedes` general problems and he think it was the SENSOR FOR THE ELECTRICAL CLUTCH FAN that need to be replaced . Basically , I`m just confused . Would anyone kindly shed some light on this problem that I`m facing .Many thanks . [:(]

RE: Temperature problem.

E320 temperature gauge does fluctuate by design. Temperature goes up in stop and go city driving but not to red and it is right above 80 when driving over steady 40 miles per hour or on high way. Fan motor kicks in only when temperature gets hot for engine and needs to be cooled down. I am not sure you do have problem.

RE: Temperature problem.

I don't think that you have a problem. It sounds normal for a Mercedes. The engine temp reading will cool down when there air flow over the radiator. Moving down the freeway should give you the lowest reading like 88 or less. When the car stands, the temp will go up to almost 100 depending on how long you stand without air flow over the radiator. If you have the electric fan in front of the radiator. It will turn on if the AC is on to move air for the AC system to work as well. You are just seeing a more true real time reading than other car manufacturers give you.
