Multi-Function display problem

I have a 97 E320, and recently I noticed that my multi-function display (under the speedometer) fades (looses brightness/contrast) while driving. If I stop the car (let it turn off the display) and then put the key in, the display becomes bright again. Any one out there expereinced this problem? What could be the reason ?

RE: Multi-Function display problem

I am. I removed the cluster to replace the some of the bulbs as they were burnt out.

I think that I might have laid the display flat at one point, and that might have had this effect on it.

It may have bulbs that light that portion too, that are working intermittently.

RE: Multi-Function display problem

Thanks,

What I see is not loosing the brighness/contrast of the whole instrument pannel, but the digital display only (where it shows the milage, outside temperature and time). The wierd thing is if I shut down and restart the car it becomes normal [probably it has some Microsof Windows OS component :), just kidding]

Also each time I noticed this was during the evening when I drive it home from work. May be it's a leaky capacitor or some thing the the display electronics causes this problem.
