I have a 96 E200 that originated in Singapore but is now in New Zealand.
I have 2 keys. One works fine. The spare key however (with new batteries), opens the car through the remote fine, it turns the motor over, but the light on the rear vision mirror flashes red and green alternatively and the motor doesnt start.
Ive read a number of threads on this type of problem but cant work it out.
The key is really 2 pieces. A radio transmitter for locking/unlocking - and this is the battery you replaced, and an infrared unit for the ignition.
It sounds like the infrared portion of your key has lost it's programming.
I recall a post suggesting it can self-repair itself if you place the key in the ignition and not turn anything for several hours. Then remove and try again.
Someone else may have a better idea, but failing this you might plan a trip to the mechanic or dealer.

Look in the owners manual under the topic of re-synchronizing the remote once the battery is changed.

I don't know if the '96 manual says more than the 2000 manual. It simply says "Put the key in the ignition to re-synchronize".

I would try putting the key in the ignition and leaving it there for perhaps 2 hours. Then remove it, put it back in, and see if it starts the car properly.
I have the same problem with my E280, I've tried EVERYTHING! Does your car recognise the key? (does it click into the steering column like the other key?) if it doesn't then you'll have to get a new key (which costs a fortune).
Hi ...tried the leave it in the ignition trick ...but no luck. The key opens and turns over the car but wont start...it is only a spare u never know when u might need it.
