E300 Fuel Filter

I am running biodiesel and I want to change my fuel filter.
Can someone tell me how to do it and if there are any tricks?
Is there a pre-filter and if so, where is it?
I'm new to this forum, so thanks in advance!

RE: E300 Fuel Filter

This post is based upon the 98 turbo model, so there may be differences vs. your 97.

The main fuel filter is next to the power steering unit at the top front left of the engine. The filter is relatively easy to change. First you need to move the bracket for the vacuum hose out of the way (10mm) I recal. Then you will need to loosen the big hollow bolt in the center of the housing. It goes right through into the filter and holds it on. Pull the hollow bolt all the way out. Now you will have to fight with the radiator hose a bit to get it out.

Refill the new filter with clean fuel before reinstalling. Otherwise you will have hell starting the engine.

There is also a coarse fuel filter just inboard of the fine filter. It looks like a black plastic plug and is held in by a 10mm bolt. Remove the bolt and gently tug and twist until the filter and it's hose come out. It is reusable it treated well.
