Lighter woe

Saw a number of posts here about non-working cigarette lighters in MBs so while fixing the little things on my just-bought 27K mile '99 E320, I knew my non-working lighter was part of the crowd. Well, the courtesy light on it worked, which meant the lighter element must be getting current, right? So since I didn't have a circuit tester I decided to just replace the element. Well, dang, still no juice so none of my phone chargers etc. work.
Can anyone tell me what to do to right this wrong?
Thanks!

RE: Lighter woe

I'd check the fuse first[;)]

It's fuse 1 (or 6 if converted) in fuse box A under the bonnet.

Did that first.[8D] Even changed out the 15A fuse for a new one JUST in case it was blown but no visible damage to the element. Plus the light mounted in the black housing on the side of the lighter port works and I see no reference on the fuse guide card to a separate fuse for that light, [:(] which I doubt there'd be anyhow.
