Catalytic Converters

I've notice more and more a strong odor coming from my exhaust. People have mentioned it may be the catalytic converter. Does anyone have any thoughts or experience with this?

Thanks Bio

RE: Catalytic Converters

I dont think so,odor is not an indicator of a failing/failed Cat. If the Cats are bad most likely your Check Engine Light will come up, power loss/limp mode in some cases.... A simple way to test your Cats would be to: 1:Listen to the Cats upon startup or acceleration,- if it rattles excessively/"marbles in a can" sound- it is broken. 2: Tap the Cats using a small hammer, if you hear the "marbles in a can" sound- it is broken[:D]....The rattling sound is caused by the broken Ceramic internal pieces inside the Cat.

RE: Catalytic Converters

You know bio, a few weeks ago I did an exhaust system on mine and I noticed that the piping before the cat's had developed a hole in the tops of the pipes. Sometimes when I leave the door open while the engine is running I'll notice a heavy odor of exhaust gasses, maybe thats what your smelling.

(Side note: does anyone know if those holes could eventually pose a problem.)[?]

Nothing to worry about an Exhaust Leak. Youll just experience a distinct increased exhaust noise. BTW, another definitive Cat. test would be a Pressure test. Just bring your car to any Muffler Shop, they will take off the 02 sensor/s and test the Cat. for back pressure.

RE: Catalytic Converters

Thanks for the replys, considering the price of a cat. I'm glad to hear that it may be something else spine911. I'll check the exhaust Sandro. I'm sure it's original. Thanks for the input.
