This is very easy. I am thinking about swaping out the lights for the Sylvania sliverstar. I did read some of the previous forums but I want to verify if the Main you lights in front are H7's and the Fog lights are H1's. Also can i buy the same H7's or are there different kinds of H7's? I have a 1997 e420. Please let me know. Thanks.
H1s were inserted into my 99 E320 a couple of weeks
ago. Awkward to contort the arm/head to replace the first bulb. Afterwhich, one can do it by feel and w/o direct line of sight into the socket. Should have a hatch below and behind the fog light, beneath the bumper.
Many types of H7s but more of a Coke v Pepsi v Dr Pepper: color temperature, HD, etc. Quite a variety of manufacturers out there trying to get your attention that theirs is the brightest flamethrower on the market.
Silverstars and Blue Vision and Vision Plus seem to be the average high end of bulbs relatively easy to buy.
I found that the hottest PIAA H7s are slightly brighter than the Sylvania SilverStars, which in turn are only slightly brighter than 'standard'.
Fog lights on 210s take H1 bulbs. Exception: Sport package takes H3 because it has the same fog light as the 208 (CLK). But the left fog light on the CLK is the right fog light on the E430 Sport. Bet you didn't know that!
When selecting bulbs for anything except high beams, consider the following. If the bulbs have blue-tinted glass, you will see the reflection of the filament off the bulb glass as a blurring of the cutoff! That is because the filament is at the focal point of the reflector, but the bulb is not. So use only clear glass bulbs in applications where beam cutoff is critical, such as low beams and fog lights. I found that out the hard (expensive) way!
so Piaa head lights are better. is there a specific piaa head lights that are the best kind? Also please clarify what you mean the expensive way? I wanted to make sure that I get the correct headlights and that I do not have burnouts i dicovered that in my older car and had to replace the whole headlight casing...
I swapped out my stock bulbs with the Sylvania SilverStars and in my opinion I would say the new bulbs produce a light twice as bright or whiter than the stock ones. I've heard the Vision Plus are even whiter, but seeing I got the SilverStars for a really good price I stayed with the SilverStars.
Here is what you'll need:
H7 - regular headlight
H7 - hi-beam headlight
H1 - fog light
1156 - turn signals
???? - parking lights (trying to track down that bulb again)
I just had a bad experience with Silverstars. Oddly enough the H7's and H1's in my Benz are wonderful. I was driving my Corsica the other night (my benz was hit by a college girl and the rental bonneville is falling appart) when the right low beem blew. Decided to upgrade from the cool blues to silverstars (I replace all my lights in pairs). Four 9006 bulbs later I was returning them for cool blues. I showed the clerk the light color and it almost floored him. It was dim, very dim and very blue. As it turns out these Silverstars had more blue tint than the H4, H4, 9007 and some others that were on the shelf; even more than the cool blues. I was very disappointed. Sylvania must have some quality control issues[:(].
Awesome thanks for all the help. I am getting the silverstars in the christmas time...I hope to have them on after this winter. I will contact you if there are any install issues but I not expecting anything too major.
