I plugged the wires and everything into my Model # MC3198 cd changer and when i click the cd button on my deck it says no cd changer ? how can i get this to work ??? HELPPPPPP ! :(!
Hmmm, what year is your 210? The 3198 is a fiber optic connected unit, and is typically for a newer ML class or C Class. If you have a fiber connector and you plugged it into the harness it should work.
There are several posts from people having trouble getting a 3198 to work, and had to get a 3010.
Some radios need to get a version code keyed in to the stereo to get it to recognize the CD changer.
I recently installed a fiber optic MC3010 in my '00 E320 and it was plug and play. I also heard that the MC3198 should work fine on fiber optic models.
So let's assume that you have the fiber optic model because you must have plugged in the fiber connector (two fiber cables) and the power cable (3 pins). In that case, there are a few possibilities for the head unit not recognizing the CD changer:
1)- The CD Changer is defective
2)- Wiring between fiber/power and head unit
3)- Version coding is required
I was told that version coding might be required depending on whether you have "other" fiber devices in the loop, like a telephone, navigation, or Tele Aid. If versin code is required, the directions are attached.
well my car model is a 1999 e320 and i bought a oem cd changer and plugged in the 2 wires but theres one big plug left it looks like one of the computer plugs that go in the back of your computer..heres my email funkyandfresh@aol.com i appreciate you guys helping out thanks !
The PC-like connector (RS-232 like) is for the telephone/tele aid options. It has nothing to do with the CD changer. The only two plugs required for the CD changer are the dual fiber cable and the power cable.
I'm dealing with the same problem. Spoke with the dealer and they told me that they have to program it (not plug and play). Perhaps a local stereo shop can help you too.
I have a CD Changer in the care of UPS somewhere on the planet and on its way to me. So I'm about 3 steps behind you hoping for the best (and fearing the worst).
My sled is a '00 W210, so I expect a similar challenge.
It should be a 3010, rather than a 3198 -- which I'm hoping doesn't doom me to poor or inadequate (or NO) performance from the unit.
Has anyone found a primer on installing one of these gems?
I'm reasonably perceptive but I've always believed that the best instructions are those you can write with a crayon.[:)]
I am not saying that your case will be easy, but mine really was! I too have a '00 E320 and I was able to "plug and play" the CD changer (MC3010) without a gliltch - well almost. Here is a cut-and-paste from a previous thread I had:
Ok, I had a pleasant experience at the MB dealership in Austin, Texas that must be shared! I had gotten an estimate on the CD changer installation and the service department quoted me $200 for CD Changer installation on a pre-wired car. For the life of me I could not find the fiber cable (discussion topic of this thread), so I went by the dealership to buy a fiber cable. As soon as I saw the cable, I remembered seeing a similar cable behind the driver side's trunk panel. The trick was to peel off the entire side panel in order to find the semi-rectangular dual fiber connector that plugs into the CD Changer. It was neatly wire-wrapped to the chassis!
The parts person at Mercedes Benz of Austin showed it to me by peeling off the cover. He even went to the extent to plug the fiber and power cables in, test the CD Changer operation, Bolt the bracket using two sheet metal screws to the chassis, and put the trunk panel back - Voila! A $200 job for nothing!
I went out of my way to tip him, but he would not accept! I guess they are trained not to take tips?!
By the way, I read somewhere that sometimes version coding is required to get the radio head unit to recognize the CD Changer; This was not necessary on my car (2000 E320). I did not have the telephone, navigation, or Tele Aid installed though - not sure if these options complicate matters and require version coding. Mine was a simple plug and play.
