I'm not too sure about the 420's & 430's (though I have heard that the 430 was a slightly better engine). But when it comes to the 6's most people agree that the Inline is a much sportier engine.
I have 2 E's with V6's and they are wonderfully smooth engines but you have to make sure you get the Harmonic Balancer checked/changed becaue they are the achillies heal of the V6.

"Better" depends on your point of view. It is better for Mercedes because it cost less to produce and has less emmissions.

I meant better because a friend had a 420SEL and a S430 and he said the diffence in driving (delivery of power etc) was slightly smoother and more linear in the 430.
there is a big differenes becoz i have e420 brabus ,420 have 1 spark plug ,430 have 2 >>> that means to much power in 430 ! and there is so many differenes if u need to do tuning ? for me go with 430 ,((420 there is tuning ((but)) ? to much $$$$ ))

The second spark plug in the 430 is only there to cut emmissions down. The 420 has 4 valves per cyl where the 430 has only 3. The air path in to the valves has been modified to make the torque band wider in the 430.
