My son keeps telling me that the backlighting Radio display on a '01 E430 light up when you turned the radio on weather the lights were on or not. The dealer say no.
I think that my son makes more sense since you can't see anything when you are just sitting in the car parked w/o the lights on.
Just checked on my '00 E430 and sorry to say the backlight only comes on when I turn on my lights. In the daylight the contrast difference between the background and the letters/numbers are quite noticeable so that it doesn't need the backlight (at least in mine).

Thank You. There is no problem during the day but now that the day are getting shorter and sunrise is latter, I noticed the problem. Waiting at my son's bus stop in the dark w/ lights off the radio is unreadable.
Didn't really like this radio anyway, so no just a little less. Would love to change but will lose to much function including pos. value on resale.
