Can I get some feedbak regarding purchasing a e420 1997. Any major points of failure to look for. Is this a good year for that model? I know is the last year that they put m119 engine on E class.
I kust sold my '97 E420 with 78,000 miles, and I loved that car! However, it had tiny rust spots all over, and I felt it would be a losing game to try to keep up with the expense of fixing it. So check for rust carefully, if it's clean and the price is right, I'd go for it - very fun and beautiful car. By the way, if you get it and it doesn't have a CD Changer, I have one for that car for sale.

tanks for replay, is good to know, also I heard that the dash is cracking like eggshell in those cars. But mechanically ...how is it...I am that kind of guy that travel 180 miles a day (60K a year hwy driving) so I am looking for a good hwy cruiser. I am a proud owner of a w124 that is making my daily comute enjoyable, but I want to uprgrade a little bit. I was thinking at e420 1995 or 500e 1993 but is more expensive than 1997 420.
I had a couple tiny cracks in the dash, but they were up between the windshield and the defroster opening - nothing like the airbag-area cracks I read about. As to the car, it was, for me anyway, an ultimate cruiser! It would just go and go and go, at speed, in style and comfort - yet you still felt like you were at the controls of a powerful machine. If a guy doesn't use the cruise control, you can easily and effortlessly find yourself going way past the speed limit. Besides brakes & oil & filters, the only thng ever done mechanically to that car was a serpentine belt at 74,000 miles, so it was also great in that area. The rust and dash board cracks can be problems, but otherwise a totally outstanding vehicle - in my opinion.
I just got an E minus the cd player can you give some some info on it I Might be interested and I might as well ask an tech question. the guage cluster speedo and tach needles do not move and the fuel needle jumps very fast and when i turn the vehicle off the gas needle flickers for a couple seconds any ideas thanks jcz70@earthlink.net
I have a 97 E420 with 160,000 miles on it.I got the car in 2000.It has been the most trouble free car I have ever had.The dash around the defroster vents has some small crackes, maybe an inch long.Unless you look for them you'll miss them. The only major problems;replaced the rear end at 120,000 miles and the HVAC blower went out last year. The rear end is a problem on MB. They go out anytime after 100,000 miles my mechanic tells me.It still has plenty of power and the leather looks great. It still feels very solid and rides great with out rattles. This car has been so great that its really hard to want to sell it.
