I went to the MB dealership almost a month ago and ordered a replacement infrared key, which cost me about $200. To program it to my 97 E320, the sales associate in the parts department mentioned I would have to pay another $200. Does anybody know if there is a way around this, as in, could anybody else besides MB (possibly less than $200) program it? I also asked another sales associate and he gave me a different answer, telling me that I would be able to find directions on programming it myself in the Owner's Manual. I haven't found any instructions in the manual on how to program the infrared, only to check if the batteries still work and how to synchronize. Please help, it is much appreciated!

RE: Programming MASTER KEY
The service department should program it to work with your car for free.

I had to buy a new key too from a MB dealer. I gave them my vin number. I showed my drivers license to pick-up the key. I did not have to pay that extra $200 for any key programming. They gave me the key ready to use.
Thank you both. I knew that wasn't right. Apparently, the MB dealer that I went to seems to have a "different policy" than other dealers (seems odd, doesn't it?) I had called different dealers (L.A. and San Diego) and they program it for free, even if you only ordered the infrared with the blade.
I called a different MB dealer - but still local - and they did not charge. In fact, one of the Parts Department associates told me over the phone how to program it myself. And it only took me less than 2 minutes. That MB dealer will be my last resort if any issues come up again. I've found a new MB dealer, and it's still local.
I have a 1997 e320, so it may differ from model to model on how to program the remote.
1) Go to the driver's side door and hold the remote button down for 10 seconds.
2) Go to the passenger side door, put the key in, and while holding down the button (for 10 more seconds) turn it to the left.
3) Same as #2, but turn to the right.
Then you should be set. That's all I had to do for my car. Hope this helps. [:)]
