Catalytic Failure E430

Getting one of the Cats replaced on an 00 E430. Its under warranty (8 yr /80k miles), but back-ordered. It must be a very common failure given the back-order is supposed to take a couple of months.

What causes so many failures?

They are total crap....that's why! Search the archives and you will find a whole bunch if information on this topic. Oh, by the way, your MAF will fail and you dash will start to crack soon if it hasn't already.

While they're fixing the dash, ask them to fix the rust damage and repair the window regulators. If they have time, they might be able to also fix the moonroof and overhaul the transmission. That way, you can check those off your list of soon to be needed repairs.[:D]

But none of those things will bother you, much.

Because you will get fixated on the annoying rocking motion of you front seat -- since the rails will develop some play.
Can't wait to drop 60k on a e500 to find out how much of a problem they are . . .
Perhaps a Chrysler 300C will be more reliable.

So what I'm taking way here. MBs are unreliable, have annoying problems and poor quality - but owners love them enough to buy another despite (or because of?) the problems.

I admit I purchased this car having read this and other forums and loved it enough to buy despite knowing its faults (although I paid a lot less than $60k for a used one to find out first hand about the "quirks".

The money you saved MAY pay for your therapy bill. [:I]

Or,
You can use the money you saved and buy a Rolex watch, which is also a piece of junk.
Point is, to be honest, we buy those things mostly to show off . . .

RE: Catalytic Failure E430

I've got a 2000 E430 with 72000km's on the clock now. Thus far, only the cd drive on the COMAND failed and an airflow meter packed up.

Other than that, it is a brilliant piece of machinery!

It is stock standard - anybody have any ideas on how to maek sound a bit sportier (like the V8 growl of the CLK430!)?
