16 to 18

I have a 98 e320 4matic with 16 wheels and a great set of Nokian winter tires. I want to leave these on for the harsh N.E. winter and then in the spring put on a set of 18's. Now I needed to know if I can just put them on, or do I have to lower or raise anything ? Also can I go to a 225/35/18 ? or a 235/40/18 ? I currently have 215/55/16's. I want to put whatever fits without any mods. And since 4matic I can't go staggered right ? and what if decide to go with 19 or 20's instead of 18's, will they fit on with out any mods too ? I think due to the very low side wall needed to fit 19's or 20's the ride quality will suffer with anything over 18's, what is the feeling on this theory ? another thing is i had a friend with 20's and he was forever getting flats, but this was 8 years ago, any better now ? thanks and sorry for all the queries.

RE: 16 to 18

The staggered setup is forever a grey area on the 4matics. The best advice I can give is either go 235/40R18 all round or check to see what rear tyres the E55 4matic had.

Check out http://www.supercars.net for info on the E55 4matic.

In this day and age i have very rarely heard of anyone getting flats, i guess the roads you drive on makes all the difference. I've only had 2 in 8 years, and that's driving in Pakistan! Never had a flat in the UAE or UK.
