I have a 4 door 1998 E320 and the driver side rear window fell down inside the door. Does anyone know how to get the door panel off and repair the window motor mechanism.
The Door panel is easy to remove..remove the door lock pin at the top of the door panel/remove the two screws at the latch..remove the plastic frame there..
remove the plug under the arm rest and remove the screw pop the door panel loose..remove the release cable..unplug the lower door light..
You WILL Need a NEW window regulator and the rivets..also a HD rivet gun to install the New rivets
The Old rivets MUST be drilled out to remove the old regulator
Oh boy.......this same thing happened to me tonight....but it was my rear passenger window. Do you guys think that you could walk me through fixing this?? (I am a female).
This is one of the amazing things about MBZ. This has to be oneo fo the most common "repair requirements" for MBZ. However, MBZ has done nothing to change or improve this system. My W210 driver side went down about 1 month ago. Today, as I was picking my car up from the dealer (catalytic conveter), another guy in a 2003 C230 came in with the same problem. The service manager told him only 1 in 500 cars have this problem.
I don't know about you guys, but in my industry, if I had that kind of failure rate, I would be out of business.
All in all, I love my car and would by another.....uh, will buy another one, if I keep my product yields higher than MBZ.
I've had this happen to both my rear windows (97 E320) one after the other and both wouldn;t roll up after I used the remote to bring all the windows down, but I guess that's the only time those windows were ever brought down. My theory is the cable remains stressed with the windows up and with temeparature variations expands and contracts its way into the gap between the pulley and the bracket. Now I roll them down a little every time I park.
Anyway, replaced both of these myself and the first reply is a pretty good explanation of how. I didn't have a very large pop rivet gun but used a C clamp on what I had to pop the rivets.
Ordered the OEM replacement parts from Phil at mercedesshop.com, he has been very helpful and is pretty knowledgable about MB parts. They were $82 a piece and free shipping if you get the order up to a $100. They have the rivets too at 70c each I would recommend you get these as they are more robust than the average rivet from your local hardware store.
I just replaced my right rear last night. I did the left rear last year.
The rivets that are OEM are steel not aluminum. You need a pretty strong hand to pull these into place. The left rear, I just used regular aluminum rivets with steel washers on the outside.
For the one last night, I recently purchase an pneumatic rivet gun from Harbor Freight, this sucked up the metal rivets with no effort.
The only other thing that is disappointing is the door panel snap in buttons. They are really brittle. I have various door panel tools, but finally slotted a small Stanley wonder bar to do the job. I replaced all of the door panel fasteners with some I bought at Pep Boys - they indicate that they are Ford style. The material is a little more flexable.
I got my regulators from the "thebenzbin.com". Free shipping there too. MBZ OEM part - not saying much here, wish there was a better part to replace with.
This seems to be common problem. It would be nice for anyone who would be replacing a window regulator in future to take some pics and post them for other DIY'ers.
RE: Rear window fell down - Does anyone have pictures
I had the same problem last night with my driver side rear window regulator - the motor seems to be working fine.
Are there any detailed instructions please that anyone can send - I was thinking of doing it myself - although I had purchased warranty until 2006 - I am not sure if this is going to be covered or not.
I really think pictures of the whole procedure would really be very very helpful - can anyone please send these.
