98 E320 auto tranny not shifting

My mom has a 98 E320 with about 60k miles on it, every now and then the tranny will start acting up and not shift gears, then all of a sudden it will start working again (right now it's not), does anyone know what this could be?

Lol Transmission Failure???

It's A Bit Hard To Tell Without Specific Details... Like What Happens Leading Up To It Not Shifting... Any Noise... Etc Etc....

That sounds a lot like "Limp Home Mode"... look in your manual for that... I don't know how to get it out of that mode though :)

RE: 98 E320 auto tranny not shifting

Have your mechanic check the TCU, or ETC, which is the transmission control unit. It is a plastic frame which has electronics, some solenoids, and wiring harness on it mounted to the transmission. Sometimes fluid will leak on to this unit which will cause the transmission to shift erratically, often times when you shut the car off and turn it back on the shifting is corrected.

This does eventually get worse, and you will notice hard shifting from park to first, and then egine codes (like transmission sensor errors) which will give you "Check Engine Electronics" and then often times limp mode which is what your getting now.

But have them check that first, before they try and get you for a 6800.00 new transmission. This happened to me at 67K

Good Luck

Osiris667,

You said "TCU is mounted to the transmission.", is the TCU indide the transmission? Do we need to take the AT pan off to access it?

Happened to my 98W210 too: sometime the car would not shift out of first gear. I have to put it back to "Park", then "D" again, then it's back to normal.

Took the car to the shop, they found that oil leak into the TCU, and cause the electronic part to go wahooo once a while. After they cleaned it up & reseal the TCU ($140 total), don't have problem anymore.

One of common problems on W210 is TCU leak. My car is 2001 E320 and I had leak that needed TCU replaced.

Happened to me too. I discovered the engine had very little oil. I filled it and it was fine.
