I have a 2000 E-430 with some steering wheel noise "squeaks"
When I turn the wheel, even standing still, I hear what seems like a rubber against rubber sound. I noticed it after I had the car detailed. The shop sprayed armor-all / black magic protectant on the dash. I think some of the silicone spray got into the steering column.
I may be wrong, but will some oil fix this problem?
the dealership will fix this problem. there is a new peice designed to remedy the noise. our E320 4matic had the problem in cold temps and the dealership replaced it under warranty with a newly redesigned rack(yes, the whole steering rack).
Thanks for the tip on the steering column noise. I recently was told that my screetching noise requires a "rebuild" of the rack. I mentioned to the dealer that "people I know with this problem" have had the rack repaired under warranty. He told me that the service manager said "no-go" on this notion. It will cost me upwards of $700. to replace/repair the rack and realign the front wheels.
The car has 60k miles on it now...I guess the warranty work you had done was earlier in the life of your car.
THANKS,
!Seamus!

I have noticed recently that on my E-320 when I turn the steering wheel completely in either direction I hear a sqeaking sound very momentarily and it then goes away - I also have noticed that ithappens once or twice a day and not every time when I do this.
I do not hear this when the car is stationary.
My car was serviced last time in 2002 (June) and the service is due 3 days from now - it has 45k miles on it and is a 99 model.
Please advise on what to do.
it can be where the shaft goes through the fire wall. the shaft goes through a rubber boot. lubricate it with a quality silicone spray. NOT wd-40. oil kills rubber.
Thanks a lot for the reply - I went to the dealer for my scheduled maintenance yesterday and mentioned this to him - they found a leak as a result the pwr steering fluid was low - they called me and changed the whole steering rack/pinion.
I wonder why do these things go bad so soon - car only has 45000 miles on it.
Just out of curiosity above the brake pedal do I have to open up anything to get to the boot - ( I guess I don't need it ) but in case
