I recently got a 2004 CLK 500 and changed the rear wheels from the original 17" AMG to 18" AMG wheels that came off an E series. I changed them due to hitting a pothole pretty hard with my rear right wheel that had bent the rim.
Once I put on the new 18" wheels on I heard a clicking noise that increased in frequency as speed increased. I had a tech look at it when I took the car in for balancing. He recommended that the bearings might have been damaged.
I have driven the car about 100 or so miles because I was out of town and no where near a Mercedes dealership. The sound has now gone away but I do feel a bit of shaking in that rear wheel when driving 50 MPH and above.
My question is, before I have the dealership take a look at it, would the wheel bearings be causing this shaking and initial clicking noise? I have a feeling it could be worse because of such a hard hit to that right side it could have damaged a CV joint or something more in the suspension. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
P.s I've heard that some wheels could cause shaking because it isn't stock or whatnot. Any help would be great.
the rear wheel offset of the CLK shd be more aggressive than the E. In making your replacement (E-class) rims flush to your CLK fenders, the wheel shop might have possibly added spacers. These tend to cause vibrations when moving at higher speeds.
