Exclamation Keep getting "Check Gas Cap" warning message and now have check engine light, help?!

My 2005 CLK500 every couple days will give me a warning message in the multifunction display that says "Check Gas Cap" and my gas tank empty symbol will start flashing, once i tighten it and resart the car it goes away, but ever since the first time it happened my check engine light has stayed on, anybody had this problem or know what it is?

Thanks for your help!

Hi, timmynabenz. If I had to guess, I would replace the fuel cap, it's pretty inexpensive even at the dealer (under $25).

However, I wouldn't guess. Instead, cruise by an autozone and have them read codes, which they'll do for free. Write down the code(s) they get (don't just trust their "diagnosis") and then come search or post them here. It's probably going to include the P0440-0455 range, which relate to the evap system...and often point to the gas cap. But no harm in getting the codes, they'll either reinforce that point or be something else, the point being to help you diagnose the proper fix.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg
