I am considering buying a CLK 320 (W209) and I have a few questions.
1. Are the wood insert panels on the dash and door user replaceable? I've seen the AMG versions have a silver panel, are there websites these panels can be purchased from?
2. Can the instrument panel (clock/mph/rpm) be replaced with the AMG version with the white background?
3. I've seen in some pictures two forward facing ports on the back seat. Underneath the ports have the logo "Harmon\Kardon" so I am thinking they are speakers. It looks like this is not a standard option. Does anyone know what option this is and if it was available on all CLK(209) model years? See the picture below
4. The car I am buying will have about 50k miles on it, should I be worried about anything?
Please let me know if there's anything else I should know about this car before my purchase
The ports between the seats are for convertible models. My 07 550 has it and it only functions on one port, the MB dealer said that's the way they all are. That is part of the package of options (#1) On the none optioned models it has no ports (convertible).
Any one out there have BOTH ports working ( play stereo at a good volume and put hand over each port and you will feel the air movement) PLEASE report it here.
I'll do a little looking in the audio forum also.
Are those ports for bass? Is the H\K system better than the Bose?
Mark, I went to the site you suggested but couldn't find any products in that store, just a bunch of gallery pictures. The webshop section is still under construction. Can you suggest a site I can go to that will carry replacement panels and combis? I have taken a good look at *************.com and they have some good items, but not a lot of them, any site suggestions?
I have an '04 ML 500. I have been happy with it and have only had one issue with it, which was a leak in the power steering fluid. Have you had any issues with your clk?
None, if those are sub bass ports then it might be two ports coming from the same speaker. The sub could be behind the back seat or in the trunk and it's ported to the cabin via the backseat.
I have a clk question too. I have a clk 2003 In the process of lowering the top it just stopped. So manually I lowered it. After that it wouldnt go back up on its own nor would the back head rest go back down. When I press the head rest/roll bar button the sound can be heard as if it's going through the motion but no results. When I tried to bring the top back up by pressing the red switch I could also hear the sound but no result. Can anyone help me out. Thanks in advance.......
They are just that, ports from a sub mounted in the trunk or wherever, but only one port is functional.
As for the top question, the only time I have an issue is when the tray like device (in the trunk) that catches the top isn't fully dropped into place. There's a switch that must make contact in order for the top to move. Other than that I don't know what else it might be. It's happened when the top is in the process of going down. Did you have anything in the trunk that might have moved the plastic piece upward? Good luck!

They should just be two ports coming from the same opening, there's no real reason for it other than style. I am thinking it was done to match the cockpit design of the clk interior. Maybe something fell into one of the ports, causing it to not move as much air as the other one.
Porting a speaker enclosure is done with a mathematical formula, (that I don't know) that will tell you the correct diameter and length port. The MB dealer that I go to said that one is blocked (I didn't stick anything in there to verify.....yet) and also some other models have speaker grills in place with no speakers. Must be for factory upgrades...but cheesy none the less!
As for your question about the car and if there is anything to worry about, it can depend on the year. Some year Benzes have some electrical demons.
Tom
With the top up there is a hard plastic piece with a small hand hole to pull it down and toward the rear of the car, it lightly snaps in place in basically a vertical position. It is hinged towards the top (decklid) and pulls towards the rear and has a piece of material attached to it to prevent anything from binding the top while it folds into the trunk. It must be fully engaged in the down position to allow the top to operate. I don't know how else to describe it. When all else fails....pull out the owners manual!
Tom
EDIT...This is the way my 07 works, I have no personal experience with a 2003. That's where the owners manual comes in. It sounds like what has happened to me if the tray for the top isn't fully engaged and the contacts aren't made for the interlock.
