Since I bought this used CLK in 2006 I have had a minor irritation with some noise from my front wheels when braking.
This was not the regular squeal under fast braking which some folks have. This was more of a groan that occurred when inching forward at traffic lights, for example, and I have just lived with it for the past two years.
Today I decided to check out the brake pad wear (18,000 miles) at the front. Brake pad wear was OK, and the rotors were also in good shape.
However, I did notice a small ridge of surface rust near the outer edge of the rotors, and on both sides, which is not in the path of the pads. This was easily removed by use of a flat screwdriver held against the rust with the rotor turned through 360 deg, as I have done on previous cars.
With the wheels back on the car and on a test run, to my great surprise the earlier brake noise has now totally gone.
