During a 100 mile drive yesterday I made a brief stop.
Back driving on the road again, I noticed that my rev counter was showing about 4000 rpm at around 60mph - instead of the normal 2500 rpm. Even stranger, on the panel window where the auto mode is displayed (D, N, R, P) instead of D, I had a 3 displayed. Never seen this before!
About 10 miles further on I stopped. I put the car into N. Moved it to D, and it was all back to normal again.
I think you may have inadvertently knocked the manual downshift (left push on the gear lever - up shift the other way). You can do this deliberately too - its the only way to get controllable engine braking on a steep downgrade on this car (or coming up to a stop light).
Not 100% certain as I am not sure of the specs on the UK model. If your car has this - it IS in the huge Merc owners manual (unlike a lot of other things, that are NOT!). Ifhtis is NOT the cause - may need some serious investigation by a mechanic and it could be the tranny! (= transmission, not the usual Brit meaning of this word!)
teep - thanks for putting me right here. I must have nudged it.
Jeez - I've had this car for 18 months now, and I didn't know that it had that feature! To be fair I have always driven a stick-shift, and I assumed that auto was literally just that.
One other thing, but not a real excuse, is that when in Drive on my Left-Hand drive version of this car, the -D+ legend is concealed from the driver behind the shift knob, as the bezel is the same at that for the US and Continental RHD models.
I will have admit that I had never noticed the +/- before. Now I will have to learn how to use it properly.
I know what you mean: when I have driven in the UK and Australia, many models did not have the windscreen wipers swapped, so you did not get a good swept area. But in the CLK Merc the swept area is so big (they have that clever cam thing) it would not amatter which side your steering wheel is.
Hey - I envy you that motorway (is it the M11?) . Here there is almost nowhere near the city you put the pedal to the metal without getting a ticket. (My record is three tickets in one day back in 1996 when I had a boy-racer red Porsche 944 - wife made me sell it!)
lol - my bad. We drive on the left, so of course the car is RHD!
I did re-read the manual about this auto/manual feature. One thing I did not quite follow was how to get back into D once you have entered the manual ranges, without stopping. Any suggestions?
Just keep nudging the gear lever to the right until it goes back into D. I use mine alot especially when driving around the lanes to downshift and get the car in the right gear and revs for cornering.
Where abouts in Norfolk are you ?. I'm in neighbouring Cambridgeshire !

Hi - I'm in North Walsham where Horatio Nelson went to school. It's near both The Broads and the coast. There's plenty of twisties around here for me to try out my new discovery.
