Alternator Removal

I need to replace the voltage regulator and was able to remove the alternator from the engine on my 2004 CLK500. I was not able to get the alternator out of the engine compartment. Has any body had any experience with extracting the alternator?

Thanks
Jeff

You have to remove the bolts from the alternator, and the bottom engine shroud, then it goes down and out.

I found it extremely difficult to get the alternator out of my clk55. I just didn't seem to fit in any direction. You can replace the regulator with the alternator in the car by removing the bolts and tilting the back towards the ground. Still not an easy task though. The V8 is a tight fit.

I eventually coaxed the alternator out the front but had to move the hoses and pump for the heating system, jack the motor up and inch or two and be very careful to not damage the radiator. There must be an easier method but I didn't find it.

As you indicated I couldn't see any way it was coming out with removing more items. I didn't think about jacking the engine up for some clearance.
Does anybody have access to the factory shop manual?

Thanks
Jeff

Yes, that page is just for the C350 & CLK 350. But the page for W209 with M113 engine is no different.

When the OP says the alternator will not come out -what is stopping it? Or, as rnettleship suggests, why not change the VR 'in situ'?

I've removed one alternator (IIRC, it was in a W211 E500 and I remember two things - one, the bolts had to be removed, and two, it was quite a puzzle, but it does come out.

I guess the reason I wanted it on the bench is the Hella replacement voltage regulator also contains the armature brushes so I wanted to check the condition of the armature. The factory instructions are slightly different on the 500.
For one the mounting of the alternator to the engine is quite different. Two bolts, one on top, the other underneath going from front to back.

Thanks for all the feedback
Jeff
