Exclamation clk 350 camshaft is retarded !!!!

guys with skills....................... if you have a spare moment to help a fellow merc man.

i took my clk 350 2005 (62,000miles) to a merc specialist and he ran the diagnostics

returns with ooooooh look on his face and shows me the print up?

1- constant adjustment of intake camshaft of right cylinder bank in direction 'retarded'
2 - constant adjustment of exhaust camshaft of right cylinder bank in direction 'retarded'

procedure : remove timing case cover and check sprocket on balance shaft for wear.

can you kindly shed some light on how to go about doing it myself????

when the car is driven whilst cold the car will shudder as it passes the 1100 till the 1200 mark.

many thanks in advance

You do not want to do this yourself. It is a very labor intensive job. I did one a week ago and it took me about 19 hours to do the entire job. It is possilbe to take the timing case cover off with the engine in the vehicle, but it would do you no good because in order to replace the balance shaft you need to have the engine out of the car. Unless you own a shop, and know some mercedes techs that can help you out, i would seriously not recommend trying this, severe damage can occur to your engine. I would recommend writing a letter to MBUSA and let them know that you are disappointed that they would let all these vehicles go out of warranty with this part that they knew was bad, and see if they could help you with the repair cost. also check out this thread http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w203...ace-their.html

Thanks for your email and I have found this thread now, I see MBTech has already posted advice and very good advice too, this is not a job for the DIY type unless you are an ex MB tech yourself.

I fear the Specialist may be jumping the gun and getting a little ahead of the proper diagnostic procedure here. I will need you to pm me or email with your vin number so I can look at this in the morning (it is evening here in china).

Can you tell me what parts have been replaced previously in conjunction with the problem you now have? And can you give a more detailed description of the symptoms?

ERIC.

Unhappy

hey Eric ,

wow your all the way in china.............

no parts have been changed in conjuction with this problem, the car has been serviced well, the symptoms are as follows:

when i turn the car on and push accelerator it grumbles and shudders when it reaches 1100 revs this goes through to 1200 revs, sometimes these symptoms dont happen but the majority of the time it does, however when the car is warm and been running for 10 mins plus these symptoms do not occur, so how comes when the engine is warm the 1100 - 1200 grumble and shudder does not happen?

i will find the vin number now,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,.................

Hey Guys!

Check out the Thread below... read Post #6 as it points to another Thread/post that will give you the Serial number cutoff for the M272 Engine Balance shaft sprocket problem! (I believe the sn. cut off is > .895xxx but not sure what model year that would correspond to? - anyone knows?)

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w209...foglights.html

It's a know problem with early R171 SLK350's.

pay pay pay

so i went along to mb uk , they put the diagnostics on and come out after half an hour to inform me im looking at 4400 stirling pounds worth of work that needs doing.

after a mini protest mb uk said: out of goodwill we will pay 50% so just cough up £2200 and we'll have it done in three days. i am writing to the head of customer service to see what he can do for me if anything. for them to say they will pay 50% means they know they gave you a faulty motor to begin with.

sods law, your car runs out of warranty and the shit hits the fan. mercedes know about these dodgy balance shafts yet do not provide a lifetime guarantee??????

might just switch alfa romeo : (

Do not jump too fast here, ask them if the camshaft adjusters have been changed for the new modified ones.
