Ahh, Bangkok. One of my favorite cities on this planet. Nice people, nice city, nice everything except traffic. And I'll not forget my day-trip to see and walk on the bridge over the river Kwai and my visit to the Khanchanaburi War Cemetery.
That said, importing luxury cars into any Asian country is not without huge cost. When I flew MD-11's, we were carrying a Rolls Royce into Mumbai (Bombay). After landing, we had the car unloaded as we left for the Oberoi Towers hotel. Two days later as we were preparing to leave for Bangkok, the car was still right where it had been when it was unloaded. About a month later we were back in Mumbai and guess what, the owner of the car still had not picked it up. So here's this $300K Rolls Royce sitting on the ramp, uncovered, with all these broken down pieces of ground equipment all around it. I asked one of the managers who worked there about it, and he said that the reason the car was still there was that the import tax, which still hadn't been paid, was more than the purchase price of the car, and the owner couldn't afford to pay it. I guess it's still there.
