Help needed on Xenon Conversion--Which version of housing?
I need the help of those of you that have done the halogen to xenon swap on the W209 CLK. I have an '06 CLK500 built in 06/2005. As stated it came with halogen lights and I wanted to upgrade to xenon. I know some people that recycle cars and was able to get headlights. Unfortunately I discovered that there are 2 different types of xenon for the CLK. The differences are in the turn signal and the number of ballasts. The first style has a round turn signal and 1 ballast on the back. The second style has 2 ballasts and the turn signal "housing" is sort of curved in shape like a letter "C". In talking to the dealer parts guy he said "you can't swap" etc etc.. Worthless. I discovered that the round turn signal housing style seems to be the ones found on '03 thru '05 CLK's and C55's and some 2006's. The different "C" shaped ones seemed to come in later '06 and '07's. Surprisingly most CLK63 BS seem to have the earlier style. OK with that out of the way which style do I need? I have both of the later style and one of the earlier type. This weekend I plugged the wire harness from the car into both styles and both came on. However neither one would work the turn signal, but that could be the bulb. What I'm looking for is some guidance as to whether to try and just install the latter style or get another earlier model?
The other questions I have are about the wiring. On the xenon light housings there are 2 wiring connectors yet I only see one plug in the car. I am guessing the other one is for the motorized function. On the installation I can do this myself and it looked like I need to remove the front bumper cover. Is this correct? I was surprised that the xenon's lit up when connected. I thought they would not work as the car needs to be set to xenon present although I'm not sure what that is completely about. Again my dealer was less than helpful. I'm not afraid of doing work on a car as I've been an SCCA club racer for more than 20 years and if I can't do it i have friends that can. If anyone wants to see photos of the differences I can certainly put those up for you to see the differences.
Thanks for reading this novel and I truly appreciate any and all suggestions that anyone offers. I would have preferred to buy the car with the lights, but this was the proverbial car driven by the old lady and it was too good of a deal to pass up.
Dave,
I'm in the same boat as you. I have an 07 and I have a set of brand new large turn signal assembly's. The bumper cover must be removed, that's correct. I'm looking for some wiring help also. I also got a deal that was too good to loose over lights. Anything you find would be helpful if you can pass it along. I'll do the same if I find anything. It's been on the back burner for a while now, but the weather is getting nice now ,so I won't roast while doing the swap!
