The keyfob is infared so you have to point it directly at the door handle, I had the same problem as I initially figured the signal was radio and so was moving around with the key fob, if you are not aligned with the IR beam the roof stops.

Treller is right. Whilst you can lock and unlock the car from the next field, you can only open/close the roof whilst standing next to the drivers's door and pointing the key at the car. Must be a "safety" issue, to ensure you don't trap anyone in the folding roof!!!
