CLK 500 Shift nob replacement

[?]I just took delivery on a 2004 CLK 500. I love the interior but the shift nob looks tacky with the black plastic insert. Has any one replaced their's? If so, how do you remove the original nob? I replaced the nob on my CLK 430 but this appears to be different.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,

This site may give you a clue even though its for W203 but I believe it's very similar.

RE: CLK 500 Shift nob replacement

Thanks, I was able to replace it. It was simple enough to do, much more simple than the C class, and required only a little patience.

RE: CLK 500 Shift nob replacement

I changed to the Schaetz Avantgarde chrome and burl nob. It really dresses up the interior by replacing the leather and black plastic nob. You first have to remove the shift boot by applying pressure to the chrome band at the base of the boot. I found it easiest to push from the side that is straight (versus the curved side) toward the shift lever. Once one side is out the other pops off easily. You then take the leather boot up over the nob. At the base of the nob you will see a black plastic, cone shaped piece the locks the nob in place. Turn this counter clockwise and it will un-lock and then pull it down-ward on the shaft. You can the pull the nob and boot off of the shaft. This may require a little effort but it will come off. At the base of the nob inside the boot you will see a round black plastic nut that holds the boot on to the nob. Unsrcrew this and the boot will come off of the nob. On the new nob there is a replacement cone that secures the nob and boot to the shaft, put this on the shaft. On the new nob there is a metal nut that attaches the boot and nob together. Place the boot on the nob with same orientation that the original one was and tighten the boot and nob togrther. You should use the indent on the leather on the boot that was made by the original nob and black plastic nut as a guide as to how much of the boot should be caught by the new nut. Once this is complete put the nob on the shaft secure it with the cone shaped holder and replace the boot and it's base on the console.

You should be careful to mark the direction of the nob on the boot when it is inside out on the boot to make sure that you are installing the new nob correctly. I installed min backwards the first time. Noproblem but it is always better to do it right the first time.

I just had my dealer order two different Schaetz knobs. Going to see them today, but very curious as to how they look installed. Help us out!

Is this it? Click on w209 and scroll just over half way down.

Does it have the benz star on the top?
