The release button on my '02 430 is on the inside of the lid, about 6" to the right of the latch. It's a rather large back-lit button that flashes green when trunk is opened.

Kind of hard to miss -- maybe you '00 doesn't have one.

No mention of it in owners manual. Pretty sure I don't have that. Probably started in 01. Our c240 has it though.

Maybe someone with a 2000 430 like mine can confirm they do or don't have it?

Congrats on getting the trunk open.

The 2002 CLK is a different model from the 2000 and there's little point in making a comparison.

I can confirm that there is no 'green button' inside a UK 2000 CLK 320 coupe.

I have yet to follow my own advice, but we really should get to the Merc dealer and get them to free off the mechanical trunk lock which no longer works with the key. It's their product and they should be ashamed by its failure. I suspect that some of the senior service guys know how to fix this problem easily or they should offer to fit a replacement lock at discount.

Other threads on the forum show that this is a known issue.

So it seems the green button must be on 2002 or newer. As you don't have it either and y our is a year newer.

As to your question #2.
Don't know if I can answer that clearly. When I crawled in the trunk and pulled back the carpet I could see the trunk looked crooked. I pushed it back straight and when I did it kinda snapped in place. There is a black plastic fitting holding it in place. As soon as it clicked in place the trunk opened with the release button on the first try. Key fob works normally again as we'll.

So I don't know if it was the light switch or a combination of the switch and the carpet around the switch not seated firmly. All I know for sure is that my trunk is back opening perfectly Again :-)

Funny thing happened the other day. I added an EQ to my system and had to remove the carpet on the trunk lid. When I put it all back together everything worked fine. Then a few days later at work I was showing a coworker my system and the remote stopped opening the trunk. I finally got the trunk open (had to repair the lock) and noticed the trunk light was not on. I pulled the small button switch and the ground was disconnected plugged it back in and, bam! trunk light and the remote unlock works again. I guess the two devices share a ground.
