replacing license plate bulb

One of my license plate bulb is shot so i wanted to replace it...so i have to remove the plastic cover that holds the two bulbs...
the problem is that i easily remove the 2 exterior screws that hold it but in the middle there is a RIVET...i tried GENTLY to find a way of removing it but with no chance...

do u guys have a rivet in the middle too...and if so how do u remove it?

i know this is dumb but i don't want to scratch anything if there is a easier way.

tks

Something wrong here. Maybe a previous owner did this, if he broke the clips getting it off.

According to the WIS, this lamp change is very straightforward.

1. Unscrew 2 screws and remove the handle from the trunk lid.
2. Unclip licence plate. Use a thin plastic wedge to unclip the licence plate from the trunk lid.

i atached this image to give u a hint...

the 2 screws and in the middle the rivet..i mean i cannot at least grab it with a pair of something, clippers or..., to turn it the other way around to see if it unscrews cause the space doesn't allow u to...

i'm buggered cause whether the previous owner was a knuckle head or was it suppose to be like this and mabe from the inside of the trunk i have to take out something in order to remove that rivet...hmmmm

tomorrow i'm going to make a picture and let u see what i'm talking about...mabe u have a pic of yours letting me see if u have a rivet in the middle cause

No. My ride is a W209, so this panel is different on mine.

David i think you actually have to remove the headliner in the trunk to remove that rivet.

Guys Guys! Stop! I am always surprised at the amount of times I read people trying to remove the plastic lenses to replace the bulbs, you DONT need to.
You work from the inside of the car not outside, Remove the two plastic push pins and just pull the lining down inside, you will then have access to the rear of the lights.
Why not replace with some nice White LED's!

Enjoy....

It seems the WIS has given me bad information here (post #2) or maybe that drawing was OK for the early W208s.

It stated it was for W208 and W210 models.

Hi guys. Had to replace the numberplate bulb on my CLK cabriolet today and this thread was very helpful. Thanks.

I had looked initially at WIS and to give them credit, they do call the procedure "Replacing license plate LAMP", not "Replacing license plate BULB", so I guess they're technically correct. However, I too have the "rivet" in the centre. Having removed the trunk lid lining to get to the bulb, I could see that this "rivet" is in fact a smooth headed bolt, as it has a small nut on the back! I guess the shaft must be square or have a flat side, otherwise the bolt would turn when you tried to unscrew the nut. So despite what WIS says, you'd have to remove the trunk lid lining even if you wanted to replace the LAMP rather than just the bulb.

On the cabriolet, removing the lid lining was a bit tricky, as there is a "plunger" for pushing the trunk lid open and it passes through a plastic "collar", clipped into the trunk lid. This collar firmly holds the lining in place. I tried levering it out with a screwdriver and ended up chipping off a chunk of the flat flange :-(. In the end, I found I could leave the collar in place, and gently lever the lining from around the collar using a largish screwdriver. This may help other cabriolet owners who encounter the same problem.

Thanks for all the help.

AEK - your post was slamming!! It worked perfectly. I was trying to get at those lights from the outside screws. It was never going to happen.

DavidCLK- thanks for the photos. I have the same set-up on 2001 CLK 430.

I also have the "plunger" and was able to leave it and just turn move the liner from side to side to get to the lights.

Thanks for your posts.
