My tranny downshifts while on level highway. Normal driving.
Why does it do that? I'm driving at 60mph @2000 RPM or so, then all of a sudden it downshifts and my RPM's are at about 2500. As if uphill driving. However, I'm on a a level highway. It will not shift back to 5th gear till i start over again. Any suggestions?
How many miles?
Have you serviced the transmission?
Is the fluid level correct?
Is the connector leaking?
Have you reset the shift points to defaults?

My car has about 80k miles. I myself have never had the tranny serviced. I was thinking of changing the tranny filter/fluid this weekend. I don't know what else to do. I could go the dealer and throw myself at their feet to have pitty on my wallet. How does one check the fluid by the way?
Tranny service is worth it from an authorized Benz mechanic. I had my 99 430 done at the dealer and it was about $300.. Well worth it. The tranny was drained and the torque converter was drained also. There is a procedure on our cars that is important.
The BS tranny flushes that the "Midas" style shops are just that. BS... You can also reset the tranny . There are some threads on this depending on your car in here. Enjoy the ride !
Babalu, if you have it done they can reset the shift pattern for you. If you DIY you have to buy MB fluid ($15/Lt) which is why it's roughly a $300 job at the shop. You also haveto buy a dipstick tool.
I'd check the connector first to see if it's been leaking, that can contaminate the TCM.

YEP... I had my tranny serviced at an MB dealer... Well worth it.. while the filter was off, he found the connector WAS leaking... (a $12 part) Saved the rest of the electronics. Shifts are smooth again.
these chassis are back in the 'sealed-for-ever' days. onboard computer will let you guage oil but I don't think you can 'check' the tranny oil honestly without a dipstick.
hope i am incorrect for your benefit
