serpentine belt DIY missing

Eventually everybody on this forum will need this procedure.

Can anyone give a good posting with tools needed and possibly parts?

Since I know I will have to do it close to 90,000 relatively trouble free miles I am carring around a spare belt, tensioner assembly and idler pulley just so as not to get stranded. I just wish I knew what tools I need as I can't lug all of them around. Some tips about the procedure would be great too.

Thanks

I haven't done it myself, but this is the procedure from my WIS. Not too difficult - but not really a roadside job. Just make sure that you have the right size torx wrench to unscrew the stud bolt.

OK so I changed the Pully, Tensioner and the belt. Have to say it was pretty easy. If you pull out the fan it really makes it a dream. The hardest thing was getting the pully bolt out but if you massage the rad the right way your set. The Tensioner I put back on had a nut welded next to the pully so it was really easy to take off the tension and pull the pin. Let me know if you have troubles I may be able to help out.

Tell me, was it hard to undo that torx bolt? Did you need to use a breaker bar to shift it? What stops the tensioner wheel turning while you try to remove the bolt? How do you get the correct tension back?

The torx bolt was not too bad but I did have to give her a good pull. The wheel spins around the bolt (bolt does not move). The tensioner is spring loaded so once the belt is on your set. Let me know if you need anything more.

I have a question

I have CLK55. when i start my car in the morning, i get a belt noise. It stays for like 4 minutes and goes away. Is it the serpentine belt which is making this noise?

Thanks,
Raj

Quick question. Lost our belt two miles from home today. Noticed the belt was all chewed up on the edges and broken, obviously. The pulley looks bent and there are some small metal flakes around it. How do we know if we need change the entire assembly or just the pulley? Thanks!

There are 6 or 7 pulleys altogether. Which one is damaged? If the shaft is bent you may have to replace more than just the pulley.

Btw - these poly-V belts should be examined during a service for signs of fraying, etc.

It is the tensioner pulley.

I am puzzled a bit as well as to how this was missed during service. According to the Mercedes dealership, the car was just taken in for maintenance in late May by the previous owner. Of course it could have just happened, but that belt looks pretty old to me.
