Slight grind noise when starting cold engine

I returned from a week long vacation last week (OBX, NC), and now it seems that every time I start my engine in the morning and after work, I notice a slight grind , or something to that effect, from under the car. Weather temp is around 75 in the morning and it fires up...just with a little extra an concerning noise right before it fires up. I did some research but have come back with nada. It only applies to the cold engine because after getting to work this morning (15 min ride) I turned it off and back on and it sounded great on the start-up. I'll check my oil level after work...and I'm due for a B service in 2600 so that may a contributing factor...but I really don't know. I was just wondering if anyone else....you know...heard anything like that before.

Your help is mandatory

Ok....its appreciated too

Post Starter Bendix

It sounds like you may have a Starter Bendix that is beginning to fail. The Bendix is the mechanical switch that engages the Starter into the geared flywheel that turns the engine. They (Bendix) react differently to temperature changes so it might fail more in the morning at first start-up than with a warm engine. Could also be the starter gear or flywheel gear has a bad spot on it. If it is more predictable to morning start-up it's more likely a Bendix issue. The trick wil be getting it to fail at the shop...

Good Luck!

Thanks for the quick response...I'll look into that.

Has anyone else had this problem with a w208?

About failing at the shop...I live 2 Min from a dealership so I think I can probably recreate the sound for them.
