heres a bit more detail... At the bottom of the leather knob twist the plastic collar it will undo and move away from knob downward. Now just pull upwards on the leather knob to remove from shaft. Do not twist the knob around as it will do nothing...

You may have to use a padded pair of channel locks to get the lower black collar to rotate about 90 degrees. I use old 10 speed bicylce inner tubes cut down to fit over the jaws of the pliers to keep from scratching up the plastic.
Just turn/twist the lower (black) plastic part (below the leather) counterclockwise about 1/8, then pull shift knob up. Should be able to turn the part by hand without plier, etc..
