I took my car in for an oil change and had them check out my wheel bearings due to a annoying humming/helecotper noise comming from my front wheels... .I was told my bearings are worn and need replacing..... 850! was the quote....... i ordered the kit instead and was wondering if anyone had a DIY guide to replace the wheel bearings.......anyone ever do this repair... what tools will i need? any help would be great! thanks
After you pull the wheel off you pull/pop the hub cap (cap in the center of the rotor) off. There will be grease packed in there. Slacken the hexagon socket head screw and remove the large clamping nut (the clamping nut has one semicircle with two flat edges next two it and a screw on the opposite end of the semicircle). (I can't remember if I had to loosen the rotor or not but if you do there is one hex screw that keeps the rotor in place.) At this point you should be able to access and remove the bearing, replace it, re-pack grease and reassemble.
When you put the clamping nut back on make sure you tighten the nut with enough torque to allow the wheel/disc to turn freely (not too loose, not to tight), then tighten the hex screw to keep the clamp nut in position.
Once you get started it's simple to do by just looking at the parts that need to be removed. I did one wheel at a time in case I had to refer to the other side for assembly order or wheel spin tension.
It's not brain surgery and not worth $850.00 either IMO.
