Obviously you have a different octane classification system in Australia than here in US. Here "premium" is in the 91-93 range, that is what you are supposed to use. No offense but if you can afford to drive a Mercedes you probably can afford the proper fuel.
+ 1. If you don't like and/or can't afford to pay for the proper fuel that is supposed to be used for the car, maybe it's time to buy a different car factoring in how many miles you drive in a year/month.

Wow. I know that lag ..it bothers me. There is a lag when u accelerate off the line and also when u punch it. I figured it was due to convertible top weight so maybe its not present in the coupe version ?

Yes, 91 Octane is just fine for your car.
I live in northern CA and our 'premium' fuel is only 91 octane. I have/ had zero problems.
