Have had this happen several times the past few weeks. Will be driving and all of a sudden I hear the familiar ding, ding, ding and windows go down by themselves and the red switch for the convertible top blinks red like it's trying to put the top down. Only way to fix is to pull over put down top, put back up and turn off car for awhile. Have had various gremlins but this one is the prize winner.
Welcome to Mercedes-Benz electronics ;-) Your problem sounds like either (1) the twist handle sensor on the ceiling or (2) a faulty convertible top switch. As far as i know, these are the only 2 switches/sensors that prepare the convertible for retraction.

To temporarily stop this, undo the convertible top "pull up" tray. That will not let the windows go down and no ding ding ding for now until you get it fixed.
Thanks clk430convert01 and consumerpi for the quick and useful replies. Is there any easy way to test the two mentioned switches/sensors? and are they hard to replace. I've done a number of simple to medium difficulty diy's posted here and very thankful for all the good info and advice.
what is the convertible top "pull up" tray and how do you disable it ?
The convertible top switch isnt difficult to replace if your handy. There is a "ash tray delete" DIY on one of these two forums that steps you thru removing the center console to access the switch. As far as the twist handle sensor, i've never replaced it but have heard of problems with it.
Thanks once again. I assumed....don't say it...that what he meant by the convertible top "pull up" tray was the sliding shelf with handle thing in the trunk which if you don't lock in place prevents the top from coming down.
