Ok basically...
In short, the mechanism that controls how far the door opens etc... i think has snapped because the door opened too far, without me noticing, and then i went ot shut it and something went wrong.
Basically because this has happend, something must have got in the way of the window opening. As the window now only comes half an inch down and the gets stuck. But i can close it with no probs.
I took the door panel hoping to see and fix the problem, but taking the door panel of didnt help. You cant see anything at all. Not even the window etc...
I dont know what i should do? is there a way of seeing whats wrong with the window runners etc???? or looking at the inside where the hinge that controls how far the door opens?
Or is there nothing that can be done and a whole new door needs to be purchased? have other people had any problems similar to this? and what have you done to rectify this problem.
That really sucks Josh. This is not a common problem. Although you can't see it directly, have you tried getting mirror and flashlight to look up into the door now that you have the interior panel off?
Half of your problem happened to me about a month ago. My driver's side door "check strap" made a loud popping noise and decided not to work anymore. Luckily, when it popped off it didn't slam back into the window railing.
Last weekend, I took the door panel off. If you remove the speaker, you may be able to get your hands in there to at least feel around to tell what is actually broke.
I've heard that you can try to straighten the railing, if you can manage that. If not, I've heard you need a whole new door to fix it.
You may want to remove the 3 bolts that connect the check strap to the door. 2 by the door hinge and 1 under the door panel. That's as far as I got, as mine wasn't repairable (it was broke). I'm not sure if I can replace it myself.
Here is a diagram of the parts you are working on.
The more I read I think this is a common problem. Both of my door checks were loose the passenger side I caught early enough and tightened it down. The driver door check came completely loose inside the door. I took it to a car wash and they slammed the door and bent the window track. When you remove the interior door skin you must also remove the insulation and the plastic covering, then remove the front speaker. You can then look through the speaker hole and see the door check and also where it damaged the front track on the window. I was able to get in there with prybars and straighten the track (this was not easy but I was determined to fix it). All is ok now. I believe that if you find it is not repairable it means a new door because the track is integral to the door.
The airbags don't come into play. There are 2 or 3 small electric connections that must be released (one of those is the airbag)
When the door panel is removed the new door check is easily replaced and inexpensive.
So how did you get the part off that was bolted to the door? Does it just slide off of the strap towards the back of the door? And you just slide another one on and bolt it down?
The small part that holds the door to the chassis is called the door check. On the chassis side there is a rubber boot that you must remove. Behind it will be two fasteners they need to be removed. On the door side there is three screws that hold it to the door. Two of the screws can be seen on the outside of the door. The third screw is accessed by removing the door panel and all the other items I mentioned above. You will see the screw going through the side of the door at eye level with the door check.
If I recall correctly once you have removed the screws from the chassis side and also removed the ones on the door side then the door check is pushed through the hole in the door and removed from inside the door. To put in the new one reverse the procedure.
I just went out and checked the car. Correction there is only one large screw on the chassis side(underneath the rubber boot). If you look on the door opening you'll notice the whole is larger than the door check and that is how you pass it through.
