Quick Question on why my clock/time isn't lighting up properly in the dash.
This morning when i turned on the car. The CLOCK / TIME didn't show the way it should.
What i mean... well let's just say that the lighting or something isn't properly lighting up the clock/time the way it should.
Let's say it's 8:00, imagine that time on you're dash, instead of showing that, it would say... 3:11 (Do you get it?)
Not all of the bars are illuminating? You know how the numbers are squared? yeah... some of the lines aren't lighting up.
- What seems to be the problem?
- Does that mean i just need to change out the bulbs?
- What about if i buy RED LED's or different colored lights? Will it show a error if i use them?
- How much am i looking at as far as repairs?
I believe that's a pretty common failure. The wire harnass that goes to that clock is flat and tapelike.......and it cracks....which opens the circuit, and clock won't work right. I'm not sure if i read it here, but a search may turn up more info. Don't think it's an easy fix. Certainly not as easy as replacing a bulb. the LED is probably fine. It just isn't getting power anymore.
Yeah you're absolutely right... there's no bulb to replace, you need to repair the circuit. I have a homebrew to give that a go sitting at the bottom of my todo list, but I'm doubting it's even possible.
You can replace the whole cluster for ~$600 or you can google mercedes cluster repair and find all sorts of people in the $250 range who will just replace the board with wires and give you a lifetime guarantee on a working display. (This will probably end up affecting your time, gear shift selection and your temp. display)
Sadly, for both, you're without a car while the part is either shipped or being repaired.
When I bought my car last year, I did a Carfax, and it was listed as a factory defect. The dealership agreed. Its too late to get them to fix it for free though. And I remember it was a couple hundred bucks to fix it.
