I thought Mercedes-Benz installed spring pads based on the equipment level of the particular car being built. If you're trying to determine which spring pads your car currently has installed, you can reach into the wheel well and feel the number of bumps on the pads.

That was my understanding as well, it's based on equipment, engine, etc and final ride height. I've heard people express rather sweeping opinions about what pads MB "always" puts in, but I've heard nothing definitive about that.
Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

I can tell you that I have a 99 CLK 320 and still have my original rear spring pads on and had to replace my front ones with #2's after I dropped it because the drop was not noticeable at all in the front. Hope that helps somehow.

Did you replace the pads yourself. or take it to a garage? I have replaced the coils myslef, but without the coil compressor that works from the inside of the coil through the hole in the bottom of the wishbone it was very tight to remove.
