Im plannin to put in a sound system in my new car... i wanna change out all the speakers with focals and prob just keep the stock head unit and enhance it witht he 3sixty.1 360 fostgate. power the speakers with a alpine pdx 4.150
Hi, just spent the weekend replacing the system in my clk. There are 8 speakers in total, 2 of these being tweeters located near the wing mirrors. There are a set of 4" at the rear of the doors these are linked to the rear setting on your head unit, at the front of the doors there are a set of 6" linked to the tweeters and the front setting on your head unit. On the rear shelf are a set of 6.5" but they are set in spacer rings with the hole being able to handle 7 or mabey 8".
You can remove the rear speakers by releasing the three black clips on the speaker from the boot/trunk then pushing the speaker upward, toward the rear window, then tilt it onto it's side and then bring it back through the hole. you'll need to turn it as you bring it back through to avoid damaging the clips but i managed to get both out in about 5mins with no damage.
Yeah it sounds loads better! I replaced them with 6.5" Infinity Kappas mounted on MDF boards plus Alpine ipod ready hedadunit, Alpine 4 x 100 Amp, Kappas in the front and Infinity basslink in the boot, be pretty pissed if it didn't sound better! well worth the effort.
Thanks for the reply Andrew,
How did you mount the speakers on MDF? Have you any pictures. I'm going to purchase the bass speakers this weekend. I'll be going for the Infinity Kappas to.
I have the Apline CDA 9855R with the bass link to, it sounds great with the standard Nokia speakers, but want a bit more bass. Any more tips will be great.
Thanks for your help.
mhua97,
The headunit is really easy to replace. You need the tools to pull the stock unit out, maybe the BM dealer can help you out. When buying a new head unit make sure the conectors are compatible with your Merc, that way all you need to do is connect two plugs, one that has power ect and th other speaker wires.
alpine units swap over with no problems.
Try to get some pics posted at the weekend, working like a dog at the mo, no daylight hours to take pics but basicly cut MDF boards approx 25 x 20cm mounted the speaker into the board and then screwed the board to the bottom of the rear shelf, tried it without the basslink attached and there was very noticable improvement.
Best tip i can give is to run all your cables down the passenger side taking out the footwell carpet, i've installed all the hi-fi and from the cabin the only noticable difference is the headunit, sounds awesome looks standard! any probs with your install let me know i'll see if i can help.
p.s. good choice with the kappas.
