HELP!! Accessing fuel sending unit/s of a 2001 CLK 430 coupe

Does anyone know if there is any other way to acess the fuel sending units without removing the gas tank? The vehicle in question is a 2001 CLK 430...

Thanks for any help you can provide...

You mean the fuel pump? I think the pump is behind the fuel filter, which is under the car in the rear.

I would pull the fuel pump fuse (#1 fuse in the trunk) before messing it.

There is no way to access those sensors without draining all of your gas. They are two of them and they are located inside the tank. Very messy job, if you don't have the right tools/equipment.

Try checking under your back seats if they are removable. It could be there. When you remove the seats look for something that looks like a metal cap thats dome shaped with 4 to 6 screws around it.

Thanks guys,

I did remove the lower seat assy. but didnt see any signs of an access cap. Looks like i might have to drop the gas tank and replace both units. My gas gauge started acting up...not reading a full tank...
i figured i would start there.

You don't have to remove the gas tank. The sensors are located on the bottom of the tank. You access them from under the tank. That is why you have to empty the gas tank! Because if you don't, all the gas will rush out when you remove the sensors. (They are essentially 2 plugs at the bottom of the tank, stopping the gas from coming out)

You will also need a special tool to remove the sensors. (They are attached to the gas tank by a ring nut)

Simple process

- Drain Gas
- Remove ring nut
- Remove/Replace sensor
- Refill tank

There is no other way around it.
