Hi Guys,
Drove 30 minutes to a restaurant, parked, had a meal. When I came out, the car refused to start. It cranked OK, many times, but no start. There was even enough power to put the convertible roof up. The only thing I noticed was that there was no sound of the fuel system 'juicing up' asw normal. A recovery truck brought us home and I left the car for the night.
The next morning, the car started. I used the car that day with no problems. Not happy with what happened,I tested the battery. It was below par. With a new battery, everything is back to normal.
I can't understand how a sub-standard battery can crank the engine many times, but not operate the fuel system. Any thoughts?
Just had my crank sensor replaced - exact same symptoms, apparently a weakness on the CLKs (mine's 00). I think it's about $250 parts and labor, mine was done under warranty. The Merc Roadside Assistance dude told me what the problem was when he answered my suspected dead battery call....
Stra8ridin is on the money. It is most likely the CPS. Please don't go to the dealer. You can purchase the part for $35 from carpartstogo.com. Install will take you 5 - 10 minutes.
*edit* they seem to be out of them at the moment. If you can't find it online, atleast pick it up from the dealer and put it in yourself. If you take it in to the dealer, they're gonna charge you for diagnosis+++
what happens to me once in a while is when i turn the ignition key, it just clicks with about 1 second of cranking. i turn it back then try to ignite the engine then same thing,, click and a second of cranking.
normally what i do is step on the gas pedal halfway then ignite the engine and vroom..it turns on. but isnt that annoying? what could it be?
could this be the CPS too? sparkplug? ignition coil? i dont think its the battery...
