New owner...questions...

I am now the proud owner of a 2001 CLK 430. I love it! Coming from a BMW Z3 2.8. I love the extra room and the better ride.

I do have a few problems with mine. First off, the temperature and time lcd gauges are all distorted. I have done a search but didn't see that too many people were able to fix this themselves. Most everyone got it fixed under warranty. I have 51,000 miles on my car and no warranty. Any updated way to fix this problem myself?

Also, it appears my sunroof does not shut properly. Appears to be some problem with the switch? It wants to close, you can hear the motor, but it just won't do it. Any common problems with this failure?

Thanks guys! Looking forward to posting here often. I'll get pics up soon too!

Welcome to Benzworld.
There is an entire cluster for sale on Ebay.

Other than misprogramming, I've never heard of a sunroof situation such as yours. If you can hear the motor, I would think it's not the switch but rather the motor itself.

Great. Thanks for your tips guys. That sunroof situation is weird. It looks like it's having issued getting closed due to the back plastic piece that flips up when the roof goes back. When the sunroof comes forward, the black piece doesn't go down all the way and the roof hits it, and stops. I'm going to have it looked at. I didn't know if anyone else had this problem.

Can you close it eventually? If so, try closing the window (may take several clicks of the switch) and holding the switch down for a few seconds. Then open all the way, again holding the switch down for a few seconds. May take several tries but this will recallibrate it. Worth a try.

RE: New owner...questions...

I wouldn't go with that instrument cluster from eBay. First of all, it has the same missing pixel problem your current one has. That's a common reason for them to be replaced, which is why these defective ones are so common on eBay.

Secondly, instrument clusters have to be pre-programmed with the correct mileage. The dealer told me that they have to be ordered from the factory with the mileage already programmed as they are unable to program it themselves. I don't know how true that is, but I haven't heard any success stories with used clusters either.

So unfortunately your options are:

1. Pay the dealer $800-$1000 to fix it.
2. Try to fix it yourself. Not many have reported success with this but you might be able to fix the LCD contacts or swap parts from a used cluster.
3. Live with it.

Best of luck!

RE: New owner...questions...

Your sunroof problem could be a faulty wind deflector.
Mine had the same issue until i had mb fix deflector under warranty. When closing sunroof, have someone from the outside manually hold down the wind deflector w/ a very slim object like a plastic pen or plastic putty knife. If it closes all the way to the pen, then i believe thats your culprit. Another quick fix attempt would be to manually re-sync the cycle of the motor by manually opening/shutting the roof so it "learns" what position to shut in. good luck.

p.s. welcome to MB vs. bmw!

RE: New owner...questions...

That did indeed work while having someone hold that plastic piece down. What did you do to fix this?

Her's a pic of the old BMW and the new MB! :)
